It is a story of a young man, Mads who had to leave his family and friends in Denmark to live with his father back in Indonesia. Here he would have to confront the reality of often corrupt Indonesian society, as well as face some disturbing family secrets. He falls in love for the first time with a woman from one of the country’s most powerful gangs, but even as their relationship deepens, she must uphold her mafia law and choose her business over Mads. As his life begins to unravel around him, Mads realizes that life is more complicated than he imagined it would be. And finding the courage to fight for what he loves will be his biggest challenge yet. A trailer of the film was shown at the 9th CinemAsia Film Festival in New York City on 1 June 2010.The score for "Merantau" was composed by Lorne Balfe, and published on 19 September 2010 through Sumthing Else Music Works. The album features a vocal track titled "If You Want Blood (You Got It)" that is used as the theme song for the film, and it first premiered on 10 July 2009 as part of the official website's online radio station. The song was written and recorded by American singer/songwriter/producer Josh Groban for "Merantau". It was also recorded by French singer/songwriter David Bonsall and Danish vocalist Per Blomqvist for the film. The song was additionally played in Europe and Asia, and is available on the film's soundtrack (available at iTunes and Amazon.com). A version of the song featuring vocals by American country/pop group Florida Georgia Line is included on their 2010 EP, "American Dream".The film received mixed reviews from critics upon release. As of October 28, 2015, appraisal website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 47% were positive against 39% negative. At Metacritic, which assigns a rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film had an average score of 59 based on 9 reviews. The "Chicago Tribune" was mostly positive about the film. The paper called it "a deliciously dark delight" with characters that are "stoutly believable, though not entirely sympathetic." Praising the film's main theme of betrayal and redemption, they added that it is a story with a simple narrative structure but will resonate with many viewers. They also commented on the strength of its cast and praised their "emotional range". In contrast, Roger Ebert gave a largely negative review for the film. He stated that he liked the "disturbing" concept of the film but that it is not lived up to by the characters nor its cinematography. He also pointed out that he felt "underwhelmed" by the action scenes and found the music too repetitive. Taking into account its box office reception, "Merantau" has successfully grossed $8,252,853 in France.
